Places to Visit in Kathmandu

Published December 2019 by Trevor. Updated January 2020.

In this post:
  1. Boudhanath Stupa
  2. Pashupatinath
  3. Swayambhunath
  4. Hub
  5. Thamel
  6. Garden of Dreams
  7. Durbar Square
  8. Narayanhiti Palace

Check out the best places to visit in Kathmandu – from our own experience.

Boudhanath

Boudhanath Stupa

In terms of beauty and significance, no other stupa in Nepal comes close to Boudhanath. This huge monument is well designed, with its whitewashed dome and painted with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha. Join the Tibetan pilgrims on their morning and evening koras (circumambulations) for the best atmosphere.

The construction serves as a three-dimensional reminder of the Buddha’s path towards enlightenment. The plinth represents earth, the kumbha (dome) is water, the harmika (square tower) is fire, the spire is air and the umbrella at the top is the void or ether beyond space. The 13 levels of the spire represent the stages that a human being must pass through to achieve nirvana.

Before you head off for your trek or climb, make sure you do a full circuit of the stupa clockwise, spinning the prayer wheels for good luck and blessings.

Pashupatinath
Pashupatinath

Pashupatinath

The Hindu shrine at Pashupatinath is where cremation of Hindus take place on raised platforms along the Bagmati river. The rituals of cremation are not for the faint hearted and as a westerner, can be quite confronting even watching from afar across the river from the hillside.

Swayambhunath

Also referred to as the ‘Monkey Temple’, the Swayambunath Stupa overlooks the Kathmandu valley providing visitors a panoramic view of the city. It is considered one of the holiest and oldest buddhist stupas in Nepal.

Hub

Amongst the places to visit in Kathmandu, you need to stop and revive. This quirky little cafe is a cool place to hangout and escape the hustle and bustle of Thamel. Here, you can also quietly go about your work in a relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy locally-grown coffee or delicious made-to-order food and juices – check them out on Facebook for more information.

Other favourites are Salon de Kathmandu, located just around the corner of the Radisson in Lazimpat. Plus, Fire and Ice Pizzeria in Thamel and Cafe Caravan located at Boudhanath.

Thamel
Thamel

Thamel

If you are shopping for souvenirs, seeking second hand trekking gear or want a varied choice of cafes and restaurants, then the busy tourist area of Thamel is your place. It’s also where you will find lots of money exchanges, hotels, bars and nightlife.

When exploring Kathmandu we recommend wearing a buff or bandana which can easily be used to filter the air you breathe, which can be dusty and polluted.

Garden of Dreams

Garden of Dreams

Designed in 1920, the stately Garden of Dreams is dotted with pavilions, fountains and urns. It’s a haven from all the busy roads and traffic around Thamel and surrounding areas.

Durbar Square
Durbar Square

Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square is one of three located in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. This one, located not far from Thamel, was severely impacted during the major earthquake on 25 April, 2015.

At the southern end, is one of the most curious attractions in Nepal. In a window contains the Raj Kumari, a girl chosen through an ancient and mystical selection process to become the human incarnation of the Hindu mother goddess, Durga.

The other two Durbar Squares are located at Patan and Bhaktapur, around a 30-45min drive from Thamel, depending on traffic.

Narayanhiti Palace

Narayanhiti Palace long served as the residence and principal workplace of the reigning Monarch of the Kingdom of Nepal.

The palace walls were damaged in the 2015 earthquake, but the palace itself dating from the 1960s was largely unaffected. Highlights are the impressive throne and banquet halls and the modest royal bedrooms.

One interesting point of note, is that bullet holes are still visible from the outside from when a prince massacred the royal family back in 2001.

Closed to the public on Tuesday and Wednesday, it’s open on other days from 11-2pm. Cameras and bags are not permitted inside the complex but lockers are available.

So if you’ve got time before or after your adventure in Nepal, we hope this list of places to visit in Kathmandu will give some ideas. You can also read our post on how to get to Kathmandu.

How to get to Tibet

Published November 2019 by Trevor. Updated February 2021.

In this post:
  • Fly or Drive
  • Obtaining a Visa
  • Transport and Accommodation

Fly or Drive

Flying into Lhasa from Kathmandu (Nepal) or Chengdu (China) is by far the quickest option of commencing your trip into Tibet. But it’s not the cheapest. For example, a one-way flight to Lhasa from Kathmandu is around $US500.

You can also elect to drive across the border from Kathmandu, Nepal or internally from Beijing or Chengdu, China.

Note, the road leading from Kathmandu to the border of Tibet is in very poor condition and often subject to landslides. Driving to the border will take you around 8-9 hours, depending on traffic. Once across the border you will reach Kyirong and from there to Lhasa it will take around 12 hours (900km / 559mi).

Most people choose to fly direct to Lhasa from Kathmandu, then once they are closer to the border of Nepal from Tibet, drive back. The scenery of the Himalayas is incredible which ever way you go.

Obtaining a Visa

Obtaining a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) is not that straight forward. Please note that obtaining your Chinese Visa does not permit you to enter the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR). The TTP is separate.

You can only apply for the TTP from either Kathmandu or Chengdu and only through an authorised Tibet agency. Only an authorised travel agency can arrange this as part of an organised tour.

A highlight in Tibet is visiting the many monasteries

In addition to a TTP, you will also require a tour guide, a private vehicle and a driver in order to travel to or within Tibet. There are NO exceptions to these regulations. You cannot get a TTP on your own. It is issued from the Tibet Tourism Bureau in Lhasa. Permits are not issued from Chinese Embassies or Consulates

You will also need to have a visa invitation letter issued from your Tibetan agency before you can apply for a Chinese visa. In Kathmandu, although the process for applying for both the TPP and visa sounds complex, it wasn’t. It usually takes 3-4 working days to process.

The permit is not placed in your passport – TTP’s are not visas. The permit consists of two pieces of paper and is required to be shown at certain check points throughout Tibet.

Transport and Accommodation

Due to the foresight of the Chinese, the road system is excellent. Even though you will cover vast distances, at least you will do it in relative comfort and with ease. You are not permitted to drive yourself, unless you’re a local.

Accommodation options are improving in the major regional cities. Expect a standard equal to or equivalent of 3 star western standards.

If you fancy a trip to Tibet – get in now before the regulations change or it becomes too cost prohibitive. And, make sure you allow enough days to both acclimatise and travel through this beautiful and amazing area.

How to get to Kathmandu

Published November 2019 by Trevor. Updated January 2020.

In this post:
  • Flights
  • Obtaining a Visa
  • Transport and Hotels

Going back many years, there were not as many options as there are today in getting to Kathmandu for your adventure in the Himalayas. In fact, one of the fun ways was to drive overland – and many people did! Now, there are some 15 airlines flying there from around the world – and counting.

Welcome to Nepal

Flights

Getting to Kathmandu from many major cities around the world will require at least 2-3 stops. Usually, these will be along the lines of the major hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong and the like.

Major airlines flying to Kathmandu include Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air India, China Southern, Cathay Pacific and Thai Airways.

Like many developing countries that haven’t upgraded their infrastructure, flying into and out of Kathmandu is sometimes problematic. A flight can be delayed by hours. Sometimes cancelled. With more airlines scheduling flights to Kathmandu, the situation is only going to get worse.

If you are planning a stop over in Singapore, make sure you check out the Hawkers Huts for cheap and great local food.

Obtaining a Visa

Obtaining a visa is very simple. You can apply in advance at your local Nepalese Consulate or Embassy. While it’s a more expensive option, this enables you to bypass the visa payment queue at the airport and go straight to the immigration queue.

By far the cheapest option, but by no means the fastest, is to get a visa on arrival. The best way is to apply online up to 15 days before your arrival date which saves filling in the form at the airport. You then go directly to the visa payment queue followed by the immigration queue.

With either option, you can only apply for a 15, 30 or 90 day visa – cash only.

Transport and Hotels

Most of the major hotels or tour companies will organise free pick up from the airport. As with any developing country, there is the usual chaos on exit, so look for a sign with your name on it. That is, if you can pick it out with all of the many hands waiving signs in front of you!

All of the major hotel chains around the world are represented – think Hyatt, Marriott, Radisson or Sheraton. Here are some great tips for using Hyatt points.

There are also many boutique hotels with a more authentic style. A couple of our favourites we prefer staying at include the Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel and Hotel Tibet in Lazimpat.

Some people like to stay in the hustle and bustle of Thamel which is the main shopping and tourist area. Others prefer the quieter Lazimpat area. Either way, you are never far from all the action.
