Why Cut Lunch – What’s In A Name?
Australia is a big place – 3860km / 2398 miles from top to bottom and 4000km / 2485 miles wide. In the outback whenever someone asks โhow far is that?โ a common response is to say โthatโs a cut lunch and water bagโ โ meaning itโs a long way off, a good distance. You’d need to take some sandwiches (a ‘cut lunch’) and some water with you.
Whatโs a water bag you may ask? Itโs typically a canvas bag that is hooked onto the front of a car or a 4WD using a โrooโ or โbullโ bar while driving across the harsh environment of Australia. Having air pass over the damp bag โ the faster the air, the colder the water โ is why itโs mounted on the front of a moving vehicle.
As โcut lunch and water bagโ was a bit of a mouthful, it was shortened to just โCut Lunchโ. We hope your adventure will also โgo a long wayโ for you. Let your adventures begin!
