Life Changing Adventure

Published October 2021 by Emma. Updated January 2025.

What is a life changing adventure? Good question. We’ve often heard people return from an adventure saying that something had changed inside them but they couldn’t put their finger on it. Let’s explore this concept.

Adventures in life could be anything from a new home, new job or travel. All are life changing in some way whether you now live in a new location, your career is taking off, or you’ve explored the world and learnt many new things.

Outdoor adventures certainly offer the opportunity of a life changing experience. Especially a big challenge such as trekking on an expedition in the mountains.

Self Discovery

The Complete Adventure Experience

There’s always a reason for taking on a challenging adventure. Sometimes people are driven by events in their life. For example we discovered 15 reasons why people go trekking. These include milestone birthdays or needing a circuit-breaker from daily life. Or to get new perspectives – perhaps even from Covid lockdowns!

A trek is much more than the trek itself. It’s more like a personal project that you become absorbed in. You’re on a mission. It’s energising. It covers planning, preparation, the trek itself then recovery and reflection afterwards. As you might have noticed, this website is about the whole adventure experience from one end to the other.

Self Discovery

Adventure in the Mountains

A big life changing adventure for us was our first trek to the Himalayas, to Everest Base Camp. It was a physical, mental and spiritual experience all rolled into one. This expedition had a lasting impact on us. We came back with new perspectives. It set us off on a new trajectory in life – with our lifestyle, our trekking and even this website!

Adventures allow you to grow and the mountains always have something to teach you.

Self Discovery

Your Inner Self

Life changing adventures have some element of self discovery. You’ve dared to go outside your comfort zone and discover what you’re capable of. You return with new insights and experiences. They have a profound impact on you.

The experience awakens all your senses. It triggers emotions. It might also touch you spiritually. It’s a creative contemplative experience that can only happen when you’re away from your normal daily life.

You find yourself in the zone – that ‘flow’ state where the physical meets the spiritual and you’re invincible.

You can’t hide. You have the freedom to be your real authentic self.

Self Discovery

Lasting Impacts

Life changing adventures also stay with you for months or years afterwards. They don’t disappear into your distant memory like a normal sightseeing holiday.

You want to stay connected to the adventure. For example by sharing your stories with like-minded adventurers or watching films and reading books about adventure.

Of course afterwards you need to transition back into your normal life. You might even have the post-adventure blues, as you miss that magical mystery world that’s been your home for the last few weeks – even months.

But something has changed inside. A switch has been flicked, ideas have been sparked.

People who have returned from a life changing adventure have a certain ‘knowing’ look about them.

Self Discovery

Some might even call it a kind of pilgrimage or a transformational journey.

The best thing is that the adventure doesn’t stop there. One adventure leads to another.

So don’t forget to pack those big questions, and leave some room to bring home new insights.

Courage to Face Uncertainty

Published October 2021 by Emma. Updated November 2021.

Going on an adventure tests your courage to face uncertainty.

Any adventure has some level of uncertainty, given it’s something new you’re doing. There’s always something different or unknown about what you could experience.

You can’t be a control-freak in the mountains, or any natural environment, when nature has the upper hand. While you can plan for possible eventualities, you are still never 100% certain what will happen. The weather, the trail conditions, altitude, the obstacles you might face can vary. You need to be comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity.

Self Discovery

Having Courage to Face Uncertainty

Every adventure we’ve been on has had some level of uncertainty. Whether it’s stepping into the unknown, or even signing up to learn something new like an Alpine Skills Course. Weather conditions might threaten your adventure such as the 10 Peaks Challenge we did in snowy, blizzard like conditions – in summer!

Trekking in the Khumbu valley, such as the trek to Everest Base Camp or the Everest Circuit, always has that level uncertainty of being able to fly into the small mountain airstrip of Lukla due to weather. Travelling to Tibet, we were never sure until the last minute whether our visa would be granted or we’d be allowed through each checkpoint.

Then there are the big surprises like the Covid pandemic when all your plans go out the window. That really is one big adventure!

Discover Your Power

Published October 2021 by Emma. Updated November 2021.

You discover your power when you immerse yourself in the outdoors on an adventure.

Choosing to go on an adventure is empowering in itself. It’s your choice to go to places you’ve never been, to set yourself a challenge, to commit to a big goal.

You can marvel at the power of nature, yet at the same time you can draw power from it.

Sometimes you need to dig deep to find those inner reserves of physical or mental strength. Reserves that you might not realise you had.

Courage to Face Fear

Published September 2021 by Emma. Updated November 2021.

Going on an adventure tests your courage to face fear.

Sometimes the euphoria of signing up to an exciting adventure is then met with a moment of panic when the realisation sets in of what you’ve committed to.

Fear not, as it’s probably a good thing that your panic is highlighting things you will need to prepare for. Perhaps it’s your fitness, your mental strength, your gear, your skills or your knowledge of what you’ll be facing. Your confidence will grow the more you prepare.

But there’s always that nagging doubt or question in your mind. Am I good enough? Who will be my companions? Uncertainty is the nature of adventure. Isn’t that what made it exciting in the first place?

Self Discovery

Having Courage to Face Fear

Our very first trek in the Himalayas, to Everest Base Camp, was an exciting prospect. A big challenge doing something completely different. Once signed up though, a million questions came into our minds. What would the trail be like – would it be dangerous or scary? What are the risks at high altitude and how would we cope?

One by one we worked through these questions. We prepared for our trek and set off. Most of our fears were not even realised. But each challenge we faced, we got through it one step at a time. By the end we were amazed with what we had achieved.

Discover Your Resilience

Published September 2021 by Emma. Updated November 2021.

You discover your resilience when you’re on an outdoor adventure.

Sometimes it’s the big things that test you and other times it’s an accumulation of small things. What’s the tipping point at which you make that decision to give up or carry on?

Whether you’re successful or not in your adventure goal, you will always return home with valuable insight into yourself and others. Either way you are richer for the experience.

Self Discovery

Discover Your Resilience on Treks

We’ve learnt a lot from the treks we’ve been on when things didn’t go so well. We’ve faced everything from bad weather and basic living conditions to difficult terrain and high altitude to illness and injury.

After our Mera Peak expedition we wrote a whole blogpost on tips to build mental toughness on a trek. We’ve called on all of those things on future treks and high altitude adventures that we’ve been on.

When the Covid pandemic hit, suddenly all our plans went out the window and we needed to look at things from a different perspective – it was one big adventure we all found ourselves on.

It’s funny how sometimes the most challenging of experiences are the ones that give you the biggest lessons and help you go on to achieve bigger and better things later on. Your resilience grows throughout life.
