Discover Your Power

Published October 2021 by Emma. Updated November 2021.

You discover your power when you immerse yourself in the outdoors on an adventure.

Choosing to go on an adventure is empowering in itself. It’s your choice to go to places you’ve never been, to set yourself a challenge, to commit to a big goal.

You can marvel at the power of nature, yet at the same time you can draw power from it.

Sometimes you need to dig deep to find those inner reserves of physical or mental strength. Reserves that you might not realise you had.

Discover Your Resilience

Published September 2021 by Emma. Updated November 2021.

You discover your resilience when you’re on an outdoor adventure.

Sometimes it’s the big things that test you and other times it’s an accumulation of small things. What’s the tipping point at which you make that decision to give up or carry on?

Whether you’re successful or not in your adventure goal, you will always return home with valuable insight into yourself and others. Either way you are richer for the experience.

Discover Your Resilience on Treks

We’ve learnt a lot from the treks we’ve been on when things didn’t go so well. We’ve faced everything from bad weather and basic living conditions to difficult terrain and high altitude to illness and injury.

After our Mera Peak expedition we wrote a whole blogpost on tips to build mental toughness on a trek. We’ve called on all of those things on future treks and high altitude adventures that we’ve been on.

When the Covid pandemic hit, suddenly all our plans went out the window and we needed to look at things from a different perspective – it was one big adventure we all found ourselves on.

It’s funny how sometimes the most challenging of experiences are the ones that give you the biggest lessons and help you go on to achieve bigger and better things later on. Your resilience grows throughout life.

Discover Your Strength

Published September 2021 by Emma. Updated November 2021.

You discover your strength when you set yourself a physical challenge in the outdoors.

There’s nothing like a physical challenge, such as a multi-day trek, to lull you out of your routine. That “oh sh*t” moment when you realise what you’ve just signed up to.

A trek or hike can test your physical strength in different ways:

  • Hours per day – how long can you walk for or stay on your feet?
  • Number of days – how many days in a row are you happy to trek for?
  • Terrain – how difficult is the trail?
  • Conditions – expected weather or snowy, icy conditions that you might face?
  • Altitude – how high are you going?
  • Backpack weight – how much do you need to carry?
  • Contingency – how much strength do you have in reserve if something doesn’t go to plan?

So it’s important to find out what your adventure entails and what you’ll need to be successful. This could entail anything from getting the right physical training to eating the right food on the trail to keep your energy levels up. It will no doubt require mental strength as well. There’s nothing like an upcoming challenge to motivate yourself to get training! Often you learn a lot in the process.

You can surprise yourself when you discover your strength and how much you actually have. It’s also incredibly satisfying having completed an outdoor challenge where you’ve given it your all and succeeded in reaching your goal.

Discover Your Strength on Treks

We have enjoyed training for the various treks that we’ve done. Of course it’s an incentive to get fit and healthy, but it’s also motivating to have a goal to train for. In recent years we discovered the value of Strength training to best prepare for a trek. We also found that trekking is both a physical and mental challenge, especially in the Himalayas.

While we train as much as we can, it’s not until you hit the trail that you prove to yourself what you can do. We’ve encountered all the challenges listed above – and more. Some particularly memorable treks were in Australia. The first time we’d carried fully loaded backpacks was on the 7-day hiking/camping trip through the Jagungal Wilderness. Then a month later, hiking up Hannels Spur – a steep ascent of 1800m, again with heavy backpacks.

Discover Your Perseverance

Published August 2021 by Emma. Updated November 2021.

You can discover your perseverance when you set yourself a challenge and go on an adventure.

Sometimes you surprise yourself how good you are at persevering when you really want something. Motivation is often the underlying factor in whether you’re successful or not. There is a great feeling of triumph and achievement if you can persevere and reach your goal.

Discovering Perseverance on Treks

In our trekking adventures our perseverance has been tested many times. One particularly satisfying day was the hike to Torres Del Paine in Patagonia. While we had taken awhile to make progress on the trail, we kept our focus on our objective to see the amazing granite rock towers, and it paid off. It was a long hard day but it was so rewarding.

Another memorable day was climbing up Mt Taranaki in New Zealand. It was a particularly hard slog up and down the steep slopes of the volcano on very challenging terrain. 14 hours later we emerged exhausted but victorious! Yet another was the gruelling long day in snowy weather on our 10 Peaks Challenge at Mt Kosciuszko in Australia.

We have also learnt from experiences when things didn’t go so well. For example, our Mera Peak trek where we later felt we could have pushed ourselves a bit harder. Remembering that situation has helped us persevere through other challenging treks.

We’ve also gained confidence from these treks to go on and do bigger things such as our Project Base8000.

Just put one foot in front of the other. One step at a time … and discover your perseverance!

Discover What You’re Capable Of

Published August 2021 by Emma. Updated November 2021.

You can discover what you’re capable of when you set yourself a challenge and go on an adventure.

Try something new, go somewhere different or step up to the next level. You might surprise yourself with what you can achieve.

We experienced this when we signed ourselves up for a trek to Everest Base Camp during the Spring climbing season. Never did we think we could trek on an expedition for around 3 weeks and to an altitude of 5364m/17598ft. Never did we think we’d see the world’s highest mountain and see where so many climbers have launched their summit attempts from.

Nor did we think we would meet with so many summiteers who described to us the challenges they faced in chasing their dreams. It was a life changing adventure, challenging us both physically and mentally. We were surprised what an impact it had on us and it gave us the appetite and confidence to go on and do more with our Project Base8000.
